Sandymount Strand

there is a tiny girl
dark skin glowing in her pink dress

parents circle her
courtiers to this drunk emperor
she stumbles
over-confident
and tumbles
renting the winter air
with her sharp cry

I feel the hope they have for her
and all she does not know

as I sit on wet steel
tear-spent
my empire long fallen
I have not worn pink in years.
